Holiday in the heart of Killarney’s National Park at the foot of Mangerton Mountain and overlooking the dramatic Torc mountain (called after a wild boar in ancient Irish legend).
Spectacular views of both mountains are right on your doorstep from Mangerton self-catering.
Use the lodges as a base to hill walk, mountain climb, or visit any of Kerry and West Cork’s myriad tourist attractions. White sandy beaches are within an hour’s drive, ideal for a stroll even in winter time.
Under the sometimes hot summer sun, why not try the local lake beach at Dundag near the famous Muckross House.
Use Mangerton self catering also to enjoy the rare and precious flora, fauna and wild life of the national park. These include:
In late autumn hear the magnificent red stags roar around the house in the October rut and listen for the long low whistle of the sika deer. All this while the dramatic colours of the autumn woods will take your breath away.
In Spring listen for the swallows and hang about for the first cuckoo in April ( usually by April 20th the cuckoo will have arrived from his South African home).
Look out too for the Mayflower, the dramatic white tresses of the hawthorn trees in early May and earlier there are the Spring gardens of the rhododendron and camellias in Muckross House.
In Summer nature takes a rest. There are the surrounding gardens of the chalets to savour. Town is just a 15 minute drive away. Taxis are readily available. Nearer - around two miles is Molly D’Arcy’s award winning pub. Around three miles is the rambling Gleneagle / INEC Hotel complex that has everything from cabaret to swimming pools. Or there are the elegant surrounds of the Lake Hotel, right on the shores of Lough Leane.
Late summer are the great Kerry festivals of Puck Fair and the Rose of Tralee ( August 10th, 11th, 12th and 27th ff respectively) beneath a full harvest moon. There are lots of nearby local regattas on lake, river and on sea. Or how about a trip to Skellig Michael or to Valentia Island in the rare climate of south Kerry, just over an hour away.
Winter is short in Mangerton. Luckily. Because there isn’t time for too much rest with all that beauty to enjoy.
Accommodation in each chalet ( two chalets are semi-detached) includes two bedrooms in each, one double and one with two single beds.
A large sitting room with kitchen in each chalet as well as shower and toilet. All other conveniences available include fridge, dishwasher, micro-wave, cooker, dryer & washing machine. Bed linen is supplied free of charge.
